The Placerville Shakespeare Club was established in May of 1897 and continues to be a gathering place for women in the community.

Located in the historic city of Placerville, California, the Placerville Shakespeare Club’s unique building is the perfect place in El Dorado County for your special event!
Nestled among many 19th century homes, this lovely building creates a unique setting for wedding receptions, anniversary parties, seminars, company-sponsored events, craft bazaars, and many other activities.
What is the Placerville Shakespeare Club?
The Placerville Shakespeare Club was founded in 1897, by 20 local ladies. 125 years later, the club boasts 160-200 members. Members do community service work as well as enjoy interest groups including international dance, singing, and needlework, plus five literary groups, and the “Players” group which performs a yearly production of Shakespearian excerpts.
The Placerville Shakespeare Club played a key part in local history such as establishing the El Dorado Public Library, provisioning free kindergarten, saving Cedar Grove trees along Highway 50, and conducting blood drives.

Step back in time and experience the magic of Placerville’s past at the 2025 Historic Home Tour, presented by the El Dorado County Historical Society! This year’s tour takes you inside the storied homes of the Bedford-Clay Street Historic District, including the fabled Placerville Shakespeare Club, where Gold Rush-era architecture, stunning interiors, and legendary pioneer tales come to life.
Giant Spring Rummage & Plant Sale

The Placerville Shakespeare Club’s 2025 ANNUAL GIANT SPRING RUMMAGE SALE will be held Friday, May 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the clubhouse on 2940 Bedford Avenue.
The SPRING PLANT SALE will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. outside in the front yard of the clubhouse. There will be a large selection of perennials, vegetable plants and tomatoes galore. In addition, there will be a wide variety of yard art available.
