Step Inside Placerville’s Past: 2025 Historic Home Tour Unveils Bedford-Clay Street Treasures
Unlock the doors to history and experience the captivating charm of Placerville’s Victorian era at the 2025 Historic Home Tour, presented by the El Dorado County Historical Society (EDCHS). On Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, immerse yourself in the storied homes of the Bedford Avenue-Clay Street Historic District, where architectural marvels and tales of pioneering families come to life.
This self-guided tour offers an exclusive opportunity to explore the interiors of nine beautifully preserved properties, showcasing a diverse range of 19th and early 20th-century architectural styles. From the elegant Tudor-Revival and Queen Anne to the classic Dutch Colonial, Eastern Shingle, Pioneer-era Gothic Revival, and Art Deco, each property tells a unique story of Placerville’s rich heritage.
A few highlights of the tour include:
- The Fabled Placerville Shakespeare Club: Discover the history of this iconic local institution.
- The Home of Archibald Speer Bosquit: Explore the residence of the beloved El Dorado County Sheriff and co-founder of the predecessor to InterCounty Title Co.
- The Home of LuLu Weatherwax: Step into the world of Placerville’s celebrated 19th-century artist.
- The Clay Street Home of James Blair Jr.: Witness the legacy of the illustrious Blair lumber family and the childhood home of El Dorado County’s first Olympic gold medalist.
- The Plumado House: From gold stamp mill to architectural gem, marvel at an 1850s masonry home, which stands as a testament to our mining past.
Each home will feature detailed historical information about its origins and the families who lived there, with knowledgeable docents on hand to answer questions.

Fri. – Sat. May 2-3, 2025 – Spring Rummage Sale and Sat May 3 Plant Sale
The Placerville Shakespeare Club’s 2025 Spring Rummage Sale will be held at the Placerville Shakespeare Clubhouse on 2940 Bedford Avenue in Placerville. Click here to see the Rummage Sale Flyer.
This year’s sale will feature a large selection of jewelry, lots of clothing, house wares, linens, decorative items, a wide variety of garage items, dolls, toys, and many other treasures. New items will be put out every day. There will be something for everyone! Come early and bring your really big shopping bag.
The Placerville Shakespeare Club’s 2025 ANNUAL SPRING PLANT SALE will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. outside in the front yard of the clubhouse at 2940 Bedford Avenue, Placerville. There will be a large selection of perennials, vegetable plants and tomatoes galore. In addition, there will be a wide variety of yard art available. Come early for the best bargains!

Sun. June 22, 2025 – Scholarship Tea
The Placerville Shakespeare Club hosts the 2025 Scholarship Winners and families at an Afternoon Tea at the Bedford Avenue historic clubhouse. Each student will speak to the members about their future plans and aspirations.

Wed. Mar 26, 2025 – Annual Bridge Party
The community is invited to “Let’s Make a Deal”, the Placerville Shakespeare Club Annual Bridge Party! This day of brilliant bridge, fabulous food, and delightful door prizes welcomes men and women bridge players. The event will be held on Wednesday, March 26 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the clubhouse, 2940 Bedford Ave. in Placerville. Play begins promptly at 10:00 A.M.
$50 a pair includes a morning snack, lunch, cash prizes as well as door prizes. Partners will play together the entire day. Applications must be received by March 18. Call Ruthie at (530) 919-6392 for more information.

Sun. Mar 16, 2025 – Author’s Day
On Sunday, March 16 the Placerville Shakespeare Club will present their 16th Annual “Authors’ Day” for the community. This event features author presentations, question & answer period, book sales, book signings, door prizes and light refreshments. Authors appearing:
- ML Hamilton – author of Mystery & Fantasy
- Rebecca Inch-Partridge – author of Paranormal/Mystery Thriller & Science Fantasy
- Tim Schooley – author of Historical Fiction
- Cheryl Stapp – author of California History
- Stephen Meadows (El Dorado County Poet Laureate) – Poetry.
The doors will open at noon with the program beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Placerville Shakespeare Clubhouse, 2940 Bedford Avenue. Tickets are $15. All event proceeds will fund scholarships for local students.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day
The Placerville Shakespeare Club is celebrating Valentine’s Day by creating valentine cards. The homemade valentine cards will be donated to the El Dorado County Senior Services Home Delivered Meal Program to be included with the February 14 delivered meals.
The valentines are given as a reminder of the love and friendship in our community.

Sat. Nov 23, 2024 – Previously Enjoyed Treasures Sale (a.k.a. Winter Rummage Sale)
The Placerville Shakespeare Club is hosting a special Winter Rummage Sale featuring warm winter clothing such as coats, jackets, sweaters. Festive holiday decorations will be offered as well as many under the tree gifts, jewelry, toys, puzzles and games. There will be something for everyone! Come early for the best bargains.
This will be a one day only sale on Saturday, November 23 beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Sat. Nov 2, 2024 – Champagne Brunch & Dangerous Dames
The Placerville Shakespeare Club invites you to join us Saturday, November 2, 2024 for a 1920’s Themed Murder Mystery Luncheon performed by the Interactive Entertainment Murder Mystery Players, directed by Orlando Wilkerson & Kathy Drew. Doors open for socializing at 11:30 a.m. and an array of items in a Silent Auction will be available. The Luncheon and Show will begin at 12:30 p.m. Costumes are encouraged!
Tickets are $45.00 per person and paid reservations must be made in advance by calling 916-802-0186.

Placerville Shakespeare Club 2024 Scholarship Winners
Recently the Placerville Shakespeare Club hosted five of their nine 2024 Scholarship Winners and families at an Afternoon Tea at the Bedford Avenue historic clubhouse. Each student spoke to the members about their future plans and aspirations.
The scholarship recipients were Catherine Koberlein – Charter University Prep – Special Education; Francesca Strickler – Oak Ridge H.S. – Medical School; Katelyn Harnden – Ponderosa H.S.– Elementary Education; Giulietta Dean – Union Mine H.S.–English; Cynthia Garcia-Gervacio – El Dorado H.S.-Undetermined Major; Kallysta Rodriquez – Union Mine H.S. – Undetermined Major; Dalia Lopez – El DoradoH.S.–Dentistry; OliviaTortilaz–GoldenSierraH.S.-Forensic Chemistry.
The Placerville Shakespeare Club is pleased to support these young women from our community and wish them well in their future endeavors.

Wed Mar 13, 2024 – Bridge Tournament
“Let’s Make a Deal” the Placerville Shakespeare Club Annual Bridge Party will be held Wednesday, March 13th beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the clubhouse, 2940 Bedford Ave. in Placerville.
Play begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. The community is invited to a day of Brilliant Bridge – Fabulous Food – Delightful Door Prizes. Men and women bridge players are welcome. $50 a pair includes a morning snack, lunch, cash prizes as well as door prizes. Partners will play together the entire day. Application forms, available here, must be received by March 6th.

May 4, 2024 – Plant Sale

On Sunday, March 10 the Placerville Shakespeare Club will present for the community their annual “Authors’ Day” featuring author presentations, question & answer period, book sales, book signings, door prizes and light refreshments.
